Designer Tips for Rebooting Your Home Design
Get secret insider tips to round out your home design from top Texas designer, Nina Magon.
Nina Magon, owner of Contour Interior Design, is a leading designer from the Houston area. Her designs are welcoming, liveable and always well-thought out. Her approach to design is innovative and results in a space that feels comfortable but with a stylish edge. We asked Magon to share some of her top tips that you can employ in your own home to bring a design-savvy sensibility to your space.
Magon suggests that before you begin, there are a few things to consider. First, be true to yourself. Know what you like and don’t like to create a space that is a reflection of your personal style. Secondly, find inspiration in the work of experts from quick transformation tips to more grand projects. Lastly, use the first two tips to plan projects that won’t overwhelm you. In this way, you can create a modern and stylish space that is attainable and doesn’t contradict your personal taste.
— Use books as accessories
— Add small objects to inject texture and form
— Incorporate pillows and throws
Magon encourages the use of books not only to add a pop of color to a room, but also to showcase your interests and serve as a conversation starter for guests. They are frequently accompanied by smaller objects to round out the mix with form and texture. However, the use of smaller objects does not necessarily mean a shopping trip. Consider a collection of your favorite travel finds or things that hold meaning for you. There is no need to overthink it. You may already own something that is under-utilized and just needs to be seen from a new perspective. Cultivate collections of things that reflect your personality.
For another accessory layer, think beyond tabletops and cabinets. According to Magon, another way to transform your space without drastic change is the addition of pillows and throws. This is "an effortless and affordable way to experiment with your room’s color scheme." Not only can it affect the color scheme, but the right pillow or throw can instantly take your room from "bland to glam."
"You’d be surprised how adding a simple branded cashmere [throw], such as the iconic Hermes, onto a chair or sofa can really elevate your room," says Magon.
Accent Wall Tips
— Start at a comfortable level
— Consider all of the available material options
— Try upholstered walls for their aesthetic and acoustic value
While aware that some may be uncomfortable committing to accent walls, Magon is a firm believer in their power to have a striking effect on a space. If you are not ready to commit to big and bold, start small. Choose bold, colorful patterns for a more cutting-edge look or progress slowly with more subtle patterns in a subdued color range.
There are many traditional materials from which to choose, such as natural stone or wood. Wallpaper is also a great way to inject color and personality without breaking the bank. While you are at it, Magon suggests that you not forget the ceiling. This is a great way to really show your personality and unique perspective.
Accent walls do not have to serve just aesthetic purposes. You should consider the acoustic properties of the space, as well. An upholstered wall may be just what you need to dampen the sound while adding color and texture to your space. The result can be something that is stunning to see, but also creates some quiet ambiance.
— Determine the function of the room
— Determine the purpose of the furniture
— Purchase the best quality furniture you can afford or consider custom-made options
Choosing furniture can be overwhelming, but is crucial to the success of your design. Magon says "a good way to start is by determining the functionality of your room. After doing this, it is important to consider the correct size, shape and use of each piece of furniture." But there's more! Additionally, you should consider the purpose of your furniture in the space. Are you choosing a dining set that will be used only for formal occasions or a cozy living room ensemble that will encourage quiet conversation around a fireplace?
Magon also recommends purchasing high-quality furniture. Some of her favorite brands are Minotti and Fendi Casa. If those are out of your price range, purchase the best you can afford for quality construction and longevity. If it is an option, consider custom-made pieces to suit your individual tastes and needs. Magon often designs for clients in this way and is working with her team to make some of her designs available through her NM Collection.
