Rustic + Cozy

Homeowners Ron and Jane turned to casual, no-frills decorating when furnishing the loft bedroom of their mountain house in Ellijay, Ga. From no-fuss built-ins to simple window coverings and classic furnishings, their sleep space is all about comfort and coziness.

Casual Decor

Casual furnishings are the best fit for country-style bedrooms. Each of the pieces has a worn, lived-in look as well as versatile functionality.

Soft Treatments

Simple muslin fabric is used to dress the bedroom windows in laid-back country style. The fabric has a lightly wrinkled look and also diffuses light from the window, keeping the room bright but soft.

Painted Accents

Country houses are often packed with wood from floor to ceiling. To break up the monotony, consider painting or staining a few areas. Here, the closet door is stained with red and green, two colors found in the master bedroom and throughout the rest of the home.

Ample Storage

The unusual dimensions and lack of walls in loft bedrooms present a number of challenges for decorating; however, they also present unique opportunities to play with architecture and storage. Instead of the knee wall simply dividing the bedroom from the open space below, it is used as built-in book storage.

Practical Decor

Practicality is a major element in country-style decorating. If you need extra open storage in your bedroom for linens and pillows, keep tall, woven cloth or seagrass containers near the bed. This way, you'll have easy access to creature comforts when you need them.

Effortless Style

When Ron and Jane bought this house, they wanted its master bedroom to be packed with comfortable touches and an effortless look. All of the bedding is made from cotton and is easy to wash. If you're looking to add a casual look to your bedroom, cotton bedding and window treatments are a perfect fit since they're lightweight, breathable and easy to launder.

Burlap Touches

If you're adding a lot of cotton textiles, consider adding visual tension by contrasting the light and airy look of the cotton with the rough texture of burlap. Once properly backed, burlap can be used as window shades or drapery, and it also makes for a great door and wall upholstery material, especially when accented with nailhead trim.

Fuss-Free Florals

If you want to bring the relaxed, slow-paced vibe of the country to your bedroom, skip formal flowers such as white roses and peonies and opt for casual flowers such as mums. White mums are light and airy and require minimal maintenance. If you cut mum stems at an angle every two to three days, they'll last inside a vase for up to 10 days.
