Welcome
Color makes such a difference: the print of this foyer's floral wallpaper is traditional enough, but in black and white it looks so fresh and exciting. The black front door extends the color scheme to the exterior.
Add Some Texture
“The contrast of black pieces against a white wall feels modern, clean and fresh,” says Stephanie Kraus, a Wayne, Pennsylvania designer. To pull off the warm, welcoming look, she outfitted this home's entryway with a lacquered raffia console, rope-wrapped bench and muted kilim rug.
Farmhouse Style
That chalkboard sign couldn't be more right. From the moment they walk through the front door, the owners of this home in Lehi, Utah will feel at ease thanks to bright white walls, rich black accents and their favorite art pieces.

Small + Chic
What this foyer lacks in space, it more than makes up for in style. A built-in bench features storage below, while a wall-mounted desk shelf doubles as a landing spot for houseplants, accessories and art. Modern black light fixtures and hardware pop against white walls, making the space look and feel bigger.
Eye-Catching
In this ultra-stylish entryway from HGTV Smart Home 2019, large custom wall art draws the eye up and adds a splash of color while geometric tile inset within the hardwood floor packs a visual punch.

A Floor That Pops
This fabulous floor made us do a double-take. What looks like large, graphic tile is actually painted wood. To make the pattern last in this high-traffic zone, the designers used high-gloss airport runway paint (cool, right?).
Shiplap Chic
Off-white shiplap walls add rustic texture to this stylish hallway. Continuing the farmhouse look, a distressed natural wood bench is made oh-so-cozy with patterned throw pillows while black-and-white framed prints round out the simple, chic design.
Bold Family Room
This large-scale kitchen isn't shy about bold colors and patterns — and with gorgeous results! Black cabinets and pendants are a sharp foil to the graphic accent wall while animal print barstools create a perfect hangout spot for the whole family.

Black, White & Red All Over
With white cabinets, black soapstone countertops and a space-saving layout, this quirky kitchen is a dream. The owners added a new subway tile backsplash highlighted by gray grout. They also found a 1930s match-light Magic Chef enamel stove at an antique shop for $180 and had it restored to like-new condition.

Pattern Underfoot
This striking classic kitchen comes with a beautiful modern kitchen island outfitted with wooden and metal barstools and plenty of underneath storage. Crisp white walls and cabinets are warmed up with lighter toned hardwood floors and a black-and-white striped floor runner.

Room for a Crowd
The owners of this Southern California home installed new cabinets with brass pulls from New York Hardware and hung 2-inch-thick wood shelves. Worried that standard subway tiles would look busy in the large space, they chose elongated ones from Famosa that measure 5" by 16". But the star of the room is the 10' by 9' island topped with Statuario marble and paired with director’s chair stools from Serena & Lily.

Back to Basics
To create a historic, rustic feel, Lexi Grace Design outfitted this simple, stylish kitchen with a farmhouse sink, black fixtures and glass pendant lights. Wood-topped bar stools and an antique pitchfork take the bucolic look to the next level.
Un-bee-lievable
This huge kitchen handles a crowd with stylish ease. The dramatic black island seats five and picks up the bold color of the honeycomb tile floor.

Splashy Backsplash
To make this small kitchen pop, the owners chose handmade cement tiles that have all the graphic pow of wallpaper but are wipe-clean practical.

Let There Be Light
The cabinets that once hung on the exterior wall of this midmod-inspired galley kitchen were removed to make room for a massive storefront-style window that looks out into the stylish carport, infusing the space with natural light. A black hexagon mosaic tile backsplash matches the black wood window trim and provides a gorgeous contrast to bright white lower cabinets.
Pull Up a Chair
Natural wood tones mix with black-and-white accents in this sleek, modern kitchen. Guests can enjoy a meal from the expansive, dark-toned kitchen island in wooden chairs, and enjoy the view from double windows flanking a stainless steel gas range.

Pattern Play
Off-white cabinets and ivory-gray floors are combined with dark charcoal walls, countertops and decorative accents to create a chic and inviting cooking and eating space at HGTV Smart Home 2020. The mix of shapes — diamonds in the backsplash, triangular light fixtures and hood vent, oval X-back bar stools — makes for a captivating display.

Fresh & Fun
Black and white geometric tiles above the gas range act as the focal point in this beautiful kitchen, paired with two matching pendant lights above the large marble kitchen island.
Soft Touch
Soften a black-and-white space with natural elements, like a rustic wooden table, natural wood flooring, and brown leather dining chairs and kitchen stools, as in this space designed by Gretchen Black of Greyhouse Design Firm. A smattering of verdant greenery adds to the natural, organic appeal of the space. Complete the look with classic subway tiles laid out in a herringbone pattern and appliances with custom hardware that can be switched out with the season.

Sleek & Chic
A single bank of black cabinets below the sink makes a striking visual statement against the otherwise all-white cabinetry in this kitchen, echoing the eye-catching black range hood and eat-in island. Throughout the room, antique gold accents add a touch of high-style glam.
Try Small Doses
"Using black for interiors can be scary as it’s usually associated with being dark or depressing," designer Jodie Rosen says. Her advice? "Using hits of black as an accent is a great way to elevate a space and emphasize elements of the design. In this case, we used black on the trim around the range to make the area a focal point and then repeated the black in the oversized fixtures, stools and the metal detailing on the island."

Take Me to Church
Designer Linc Thelen transformed an old church into a stunning modern family home. The white-and-black palette showcases the architectural and historical details, including high ceilings, stained-glass windows and exposed beams. In the kitchen and dining area, dark accents unify the soaring open-plan space while pendant lights literally and visually help draw a connecting line from top to bottom.

Punchy Paper

Traditional Charm
Black, cushioned dining chairs and a long, metal chandelier draw the eye to this otherwise neutral, traditional-style dining space. A natural wood table grounds the space and adds warmth to the black-and-white design.

Scandinavian Simplicity
Choosing a few key pieces for this dining room — from a trio of black-and-white artwork to sculptural chairs to a pop of greenery — and letting them shine, instead of filling the space with furniture, lets the room feel airy and restful.
Seeing Stripes
A tufted, L-shaped bench makes a vibrant statement against bold, black-and-white painted wall stripes in this breakfast nook. Chic, acrylic dining chairs allow a clear view of the white, tulip dining table while a vase of orange ranunculus and an eclectic, brass light fixture complete the chic design.
Mix & Match
A mix of classic and cool, this dining room features black mid-century wood dining chairs from Noir, a molded plastic Panton chair from Design Within Reach and a pine farm table from British Cottage. The circular industrial-style chandelier is by Robert Abbey.

Indoor-Outdoor
When renovating his mid-century home, designer Brian Patrick Flynn's main objective was to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living space. Tall, black-trimmed windows flank one end of the galley kitchen, providing chic contrast to the white, paneled walls. On pretty days, the kitchen door is kept open and leads out to a massive entertaining deck designed for parties with friends and family.
Cabin Style
White walls, antique art and warm hardwood flooring create a calm and inviting atmosphere in this dining room. Black lacquered dining chairs border a natural wood table while a pair of plaid armchairs add weight and pattern to the lodge-inspired room.
Statement Art
The amazing, oversized art in this designer dining room is actually a cover-up for an annoying off-center window. The homeowner had a handyman build a wood canvas double the window’s size, which she then painted to match the room's black-and-white bench, pillows, flooring and furniture.

Mad About Midmod
"Pairing black-and-white with wood tones and a multicolor rug makes the dining space in this mid-century house feel homey,” says Shea McGee, a designer in Salt Lake City, Utah. The black chairs tie together the light fixture (from the designer’s store, McGee & Co.) and the art above the cabinet.

Life in Black and White
This farmhouse-style dining room's dark gray shiplap is a chic backdrop for a black-and-white photo gallery wall.
You Don't Need Much
Light filters beautifully through this dining room's basketweave pendants, their dark color an interesting contrast to the room's mostly light palette.
Play With Color & Texture
The key to pulling off a designer-worthy look? Keep colors simple while playing with a myriad of textures and finishes. A matte black ceiling is reflected in a black lacquered dining table while a blue crushed velvet, bearskin-inspired rug provides a soft place to land. Glam gold finishes are used throughout the space — a chic contrast to the cozy, wicker-look dining chairs.
Master Bedroom
A weathered-wood canopy bed from Restoration Hardware is paired with an equally awe-inspiring beaded chandelier from Regina Andrew in this sleep-inducing, black-and-white bedroom. Rounding out the cozy vibes are a pair of light wood nightstands and a bright green loveseat from World Market. The wall color is Inkwell by Sherwin-Williams.
Lofty Dreams
The painters had to use scaffolding to reach the window trim and paint the paneling on this 20-plus-foot ceiling. A dreamy, 5-foot-tall bronze chandelier by Townsend Design helps fill the space. “This room didn’t feel very cozy at first because of the tall ceiling,” says the homeowner. So she layered rugs (the red wool one is from a trip to Paris), mixed a vintage woven bench with modern nightstands by Noir, added green lamps from Circa Lighting and topped the white bedding with a soft pink coverlet from Cisco Home.

Slumber In Style
Light wood tones and black-and-white linens and artwork make this midcentury-modern bedroom pop. The palette creates an airy, open feel, perfect for relaxing.
Fantastic Florals
Two words: floral wallpaper. To keep the bold paper from overwhelming the space, designers made sure that there was plenty of natural light to keep it bright, then added white linens and crisp, white nightstands to complete the look.
Subtle Yet Stylish
To keep this kid's room looking clean (even when toys are strewn about), the homeowners chose a neutral color palette and simple moon prints that reflect their son's interest in outer space.

Totally Teen
Perfect for a teen girl, this eclectic bedroom features a white upholstered bed with a tufted headboard and a charcoal-and-white wallpaper accent wall. A brass chest and faux fur rug sit at the foot of the bed, while gold oval mirrors are positioned on either side. Pink pillows add a pop of color and black hardwood floors provide a finishing touch.
Scandinavian Slumber
A modern, black four-poster bed rests on a traditional, black-and-white area rug in this Scandinavian-style master bedroom. An exposed wood ceiling beam draws the eye up while wood nightstands continue the cozy vibes below.

Nature Play
In this space, designers paired an eye-catching, nature-inspired wallpaper with glossy black wainscoting, a vintage wood dresser and gold details.
Green With Envy
Black-and-white gets a serene spin with a dark olive velvet headboard (from Crate & Barrel), soft pink accents (a throw from West Elm and shams from Pottery Barn), and a Four Hands bench topped with a sheepskin throw. The homeowner picked up a pair of vintage burl wood nightstands on chairish.com. The offset-stripe PBteen rug coordinates with the black-trimmed shades by Smith & Noble.

Scribble Scrabble
Here, designers used white walls and a white floor as a blank canvas on which to layer dynamic wallpaper and strong patterns. The delicate gold canopy bed in the center helps unify the eclectic look.
Lizard Paper
This master bedroom lacked storage and was challenged by its curved shape. Studio Revolution built out a walk-in closet on one side of the room. Rather than hide the presence of the closet — which is the first spot you see upon entering the space — the designers turned it into a feature by adding fun black-and-white iguana wallpaper by Timorous Beasties.
Cozy Urban Living
The stylish master bedroom at HGTV Urban Oasis 2017 features a boutique hotel vibe that mixes classic and modern design elements for a unique urban look with artistic style.

Two-Toned
This loft master bedroom has a contemporary style epitomized by the black canopy bed and diagonal-painted accent wall. Navy and white bedding, ottomans and an area rug complement the gray cement floor while adding soft texture to the space.
Designer Touch
Designer Tiffany Brooks used a color scheme composed of neutrals, grays and touches of red, black and white to give this guest bedroom a lovely sense of style. A playful mix of patterns and prints takes the space to the next level.

For the Kids
A pair of bunk beds makes this the perfect spot for sleepovers. A fun black and white pattern is carried from the triangle wall decals to the graphic-print bedspreads and white, Danish-style furniture. Model airplanes are hung in a group from the ceiling to give this kids' room its own mini airshow.
Calm & Cozy
The homeowners wanted a stylish, gender neutral nursery that would feel welcoming and soft, so designers created a monochromatic space that is sophisticated and comfortable for both parents and baby. Soft bedding fills the crib, and a plush rug covers the floor. To make the space personal, designers added the child's name in letters covered in wool above the crib.
Rainy Day
Go bold or go to bed! Fun raindrop-patterned wallpaper pairs perfectly with a simple daybed in this playful child's space. Keeping the color palette similar lets the different prints work together.
Pop of Pink
The black and white wallpaper in the guest bedroom creates a brilliant contrast in the space, while beautiful, red floral quilts and pink accents add splashes of welcome color.
Room to Grow
The occupant of this crib can go from baby to big kid to teen in this contemporary room featuring a black accent wall, colorful area rug, and woven, textured baskets.
A Look Everyone Loves
At 5 and 7, these sisters may play differently — Zara is into dolls, Tessa has moved on to making forts — but a room decorated with fun metallic touches and playful patterns works for both.

Whale of a Good Time
This nursery is a perfect example of how a room can rock a theme and stay sophisticated, timeless and relevant through the use of bold color, dramatic pattern and mature furnishings. To balance a bold pattern, make sure your colors have a weight to them that can hold up. Designer Karen Wolf used bright mid-tones to balance the whales and also showcase them.
Chevron, But Updated
To ensure a comfy arrival for her clients' new addition, designer Kerra Michele Huerta layered this nursery with a plush sheepskin rug and soft accessories. Graphic black-and-white wallpaper behind the crib, an updated take on the popular chevron pattern of a few years ago, will easily grow with the baby, while a handmade toy sheep from Germany promises to be a great cuddle buddy.
Fit for a Princess
This adorable bedroom was created for a 3-year-old girl who was ready to transition to a big kid's room. The designer's goal was to make a space that was fun and imaginative and could grow along with its owner.
Clean & Classic
“People get hung up on metal finishes needing to match, but this bathroom is a perfect example that a mix can look great,” says Joyce Downing Pickens, a designer in Los Angeles. The black vanity, white marble countertop, and black-and-white basket weave tile are a neutral canvas for the polished-nickel faucets, brass cabinet knobs and pulls, brass mirrors from Restoration Hardware and black sconces from Schoolhouse Electric.

Contemporary Cottage
Graphic black-and-white tile makes a bold dramatic statement in this updated shower. Sleek subway tile is used throughout the rest of the space to balance, and the pitched ceiling adds height to the room. The charcoal gray vanity is topped with a simple white countertop.
Black, White and Pink All Over
This modern bathroom features neon-colored walls, distinctive sconce lights, a large stone sink and a patterned floor of black, white and gray.
A Larger-Than-Life Sink
"While this trough-like station is a great fit for a family with four kids, it’s also a statement piece," says designer Kara Hebert. She paired the black-and-white Kohler sink with Thomas O’Brien sconces that mimic the two-tone look. For a kick, she picked tiles by Cement Tile Shop in shades of blue. Mirrored medicine chests and a roomy basket provide storage.
Splish-Splash
Square footage was borrowed from a guest bathroom and a closet to create this spa-like wet room. Outfitted in black-and-white tile, this soaking, showering and steaming space is the ultimate relaxation station.
Farmhouse Feels
Designers wanted to carry the pretty and classic farmhouse design of the rest of this home into the master suite, so they brought in a beautiful clawfoot tub and chrome fixtures. To add an elegant touch to the space, a chandelier with ornate details was added, while the shiplap backsplash and marble tile kept the space neutral and simple.
Pretty Paper
Give a small powder room a graphic, yet pretty punch with black-and-white floral wallpaper.
Back in Black
Black can feel like a scary choice on the wall, but it can actually make a space feel more intimate. This gorgeous bathroom uses the color brilliantly and turns it into a cool platform for crisp color contrasts like the white towels, pretty wood dresser. and black-and-white, art deco-inspired floor tile.
Tuxedo Style
This big bathroom has a basic foundation: white walls white subway tile, a white double vanity. What takes it into seriously chic territory is tuxedo-crisp black trim and a pretty patterned concrete tile floor.
Up the Drama
Gold accents bring a little sparkle to this dramatically black master bathroom. The double vanity features deep vessel sinks and faces a large, walk-in glass shower. For a true spa experience, the bathtub area is designed with floor-to-ceiling marble.
Color Surprise
Add an unexpected splash of color to the inside of your vanity, dresser or nightstand drawers by painting them a bold hue, like this shade of vibrant yellow. The bright, citrusy color brings unexpected energy to the black-and-white room while small black-and-white tile creates a modern, digital look on the floor below.
Patterns That Pop
Take white tile from boring to brazen by choosing patterns that pop, like the floor, wall and shower tile in this eclectic bath.

Punchy Pups
“Playful dog wallpaper kicked off the redo of this bathroom, designed for a young girl. The black-and-white pattern paved the way for a big pop of color on the vanity. Fuchsia is vibrant and hip, and it’s a shade she won’t outgrow.” — Shannon Weller, Tracy Lynn Studio, San Diego, CA
Simply Pretty
A black, white and beige color scheme gives this minimal, modern design a bit of warmth in the master bathroom. The focal point in the space is the black free-standing soaking tub with black hardware atop lovely hexagon tile flooring.
Geometric Splash
Sculptural pendants and bold geometric tiles make a strong visual statement in this powder room.
Posh & Peaceful
The master bathroom in HGTV Smart Home 2020 makes getting ready in the morning a breeze with its high-tech features like a smart mirror, programmable shower and even a heated toilet seat. At the end of the day, when you’re ready to relax, there is a huge soaking tub and nine-head spa shower with a slew of customizable features.

Floor-to-Ceiling Elegance
The master bathroom in this upgraded modern farmhouse features stunning floor-to-ceiling tile in the walk-in shower with a large rectangular window that lets in natural light.
Bold Luxury
This modern black-and-white bathroom is truly luxurious. The brass faucets, drawer handles and mirror frames provide a touch of opulence while the black honeycomb tile floor and double vanity provide sleek symmetry. But the true star is a stunning black-and-white freestanding soaking tub, a gorgeous spot to let the day's stresses soak away.
Dark Charcoal
Exposed wooden beams provide contrast in this white, modern living space with a rustic vibe. The charcoal stone fireplace extends from floor-to-ceiling, divided by a natural wood mantle. A nearby striped black-and-white rug shares the space with a modern coffee table and blue velvet sofa.
Melting Pot
"This homeowner was drawn to a slew of styles — traditional, rustic, country, and modern — so to combine them all in a way that’s eclectic but still cohesive, I relied on a limited color palette of white, black, and one pop of yellow,” says Sarah Sherman Samuel, a designer based in Los Angeles. The dark gray sofa is by Stem, and the coffee table is from CB2. The yellow chair from Crate & Barrel plays up all the sunlight that hits the room.
High-Gloss
A dramatic, high-gloss black accent wall sets the stage for a perfectly mismatched photo gallery in this eclectic living room. A black Suzani chair and ottoman are vintage pieces reupholstered by the designer with colorful textiles that add a splash of eye-catching color.
Local Flavor
Add personality to midcentury style by letting your home’s geographic location influence the design. For this house in Austin, Texas, for example, designer Christen Ales chose colors and motifs that give a nod to southwestern aesthetics. “The décor mixes fun bohemian patterns and textures, like this wallpaper from Cavern Home, with modern and more traditional Mexican-style furniture silhouettes for a clean, but eclectic look,” she says.
Tall Trees
This modern living room turns firewood storage into an eye-catching part of the decor. The color of stacked wood pops against the rustic black of the eye-catching fireplace surround.
Memory Lane
A mix of photos of the homeowner's own wedding along with family photos of her and her husband's parents' weddings are given a consistent look when housed in black frames with generous white mattes and printed in black-and-white in the couple's family room.
Stylish Sunroom
This thrifted sofa was reupholstered in green velvet and draws the eye down from the black-painted ceiling. Joined by a soft black-and-white shag rug, this vibrant room has a surprisingly cozy feel.
Vintage Cozy
In this living room, a casual backdrop of white paneling contrasts imaginatively with designer Leanne Ford's use of a more formal tufted leather sofa and Oriental rug, as seen on HGTV's Restored by the Fords.
High Contrast
This show-stopping living room design creates the feeling of a larger space by using bold black-and-white painted stripes to draw the eye up.
Pop Art
Inspired by his client's custom pop art collection, designer Joe Human packed this modern apartment with bold prints and patterns. In the living room, polka dot wallpaper enlivens the space without competing with the vibrant artwork.
Textured Tile
Black-and-white textiles and an oversized black-framed mirror pop against this all-white fireplace featuring Moroccan-style tile that's textured to the touch.
Fancy Farmhouse
The back wall of the built-in bookshelves in this midcentury farmhouse were painted black to allow all-white artwork, photos and vases to pop. Gold details complement the black-and-white decor and add soft elegance to the space.
Approachable
To give this inviting cottage living room a bit of symmetry, designers added identical black, console tables, art, table lamps and geometric sculptures to either side of the fireplace. A black farmhouse coffee table and modern black-and-white rug pull the look together.
I See a Seashell
In this coastal living room, an indented panel in the wall is covered in black-and-white seashell-patterned wallpaper to offset the otherwise all-white space. A circular mirror adds a brightening effect that matches the sunny, bright look of the white room and echoes the style of the circular gold coffee table.
Graffiti
Bold, black-and-white graffiti-inspired wallpaper takes this simply stylish space to whole other level of cool.
Energetic Exercise Space
Located off the covered porch in this home's lower level, the energetic exercise room offers state-of-the-art equipment, lots of natural light and an ultra-cool black-and-white accent wall.
Peel & Stick
Stylist Jenny Reimold turned her cluttered garage into a dreamy home gym by covering the walls in inexpensive peel-and-stick wallpaper in a trendy black-and-white pattern. For the floors, she chose black peel-and-stick polyester tiles for their non-slip and mildew-resistant properties.
Rec Room
A neon sign shines against the black walls of this cool recreation room where a friendly game is often enjoyed on the stylish white ping-pong table.
Work in Style
A neutral wood and marble Crate & Barrel dining table and white leather chairs from Collectic Home get dialed up with cabana-stripe cotton drapes from Half Price Drapes and a cowhide rug. Deep gray (Graphite by Benjamin Moore) on the office’s French doors not only sets the home office space apart but also connects it to the adjacent living room — which has the same color on the accent wall.

Charred
Though at first glance the office at the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2015 appears perfectly traditional, a closer look reveals a charred cedar wood writing desk that offers a bit of destructive, rustic charm. "The design was inspired by the idea that some of the most beautiful pieces of literature, art and design result from destruction," designer Brittany Haines says.
