World Garden Tour
The Netherlands, Puerto Rico and England
Episode WGT-212
Located in Leiden, Hortus Botanicus is not only a beautiful garden, but one which raises plants for research, study and teaching. It is a garden for all seasons. There are three main garden areas: Clusisgarden, Von Siebold Memorial Garden, and the tropical greenhouses. Chedin Gonzalez de Horta guides us around the charming gardens and patio attached to her home in Guaynabo, site of Puerto Rico's first settlement at the Caparra Ruins. The gardens are full of wonders: mango trees, ferns, lemon trees, elephant ears and lily pads in a koi pond. The gardens are also home to many of the family's pet parrots and pigeons. Newby Hall, a beautiful Georgian-style mansion, has one of the best private gardens in England. It has outstanding collections of plants that are beautifully cared for. Giant double herbaceous borders are hedged either side by yew trees. Among the formal parts are the dramatic 19th century statue walk, striking seasonal gardens, an excellent garden of old roses and Sylvia's Garden, where herbs and grey-leafed plants flourish around paved paths.
