Tulip Fever
Episode HSPR-110
All About
Host David Tarrant begins his journey in Amsterdam, famous for its spirit of liberation but also for it bridges and canals. He travels next to the historic city of Leiden and the Hortus Botanicus, where he learns the mysterious and sinister beginnings of the Dutch tulip industry. But his real goal is to discover the native plants that have been so greatly overshadowed by their immigrant cousins. He searches for these natives as he travels through the back roads, along the famous Holland dikes, past windmills and fields filled with rapeseed in bloom. In quaint and beautiful Delft, it is said, the first tulip was planted. Determined to find the natives, Tarrant investigates the wildflowers that pop up in the masses of colorful bulbs. Returning to the bulb-growing region he can't help but be enraptured by the veritable sea of tulips.
