George Merrick's mother, Althea, selected the Florida-native coral rock that made the perfect building blocks for their home.

Althea's artistic eye is evident throughout the house. The living room is filled with works of art, painted by members of her family.
What began as a 1,500-acre citrus plantation turned into Coral Gables, or "City Beautiful," whose heart is at the boyhood home of its founder, George Merrick. His bungalow, built of local pine and coral rock, proved to be a style well fitted for Miami's tropical climate with steeply pitched, overhanging roofs, and many doors and windows that allowed cross ventilation.

More than a century after George Merrick first came to Florida, Coral Gables remains the "city beautiful" of his dreams -- a dream born of humble beginnings and great hope, nurtured in a simple bungalow.

Sweeping Mediterranean arches frame the dining table and open the space like an invitation, capturing the Florida spirit of the home.

After a devastating hurricane, Althea was forced to open the home to boarders. She made sure that Coral Gables would stay in the Merrick family.
