The East Room Decor

The Green Room

The Green Room features green silk-covered walls. The green silk tapestry was installed in 1962 and was selected by First Lady Jacquelyn Kennedy.

The Green Room, Detail

The Green Room is used for small receptions and for serving pre-dinner cocktails to White House guests. With its intimate size and classic, tasteful furnishings it is one of the home's more popular rooms. This year framed gold paper silhouettes depiciting early presidents celebrating Christmas hang in each of the room's windows.

The Red Room

The Red Room is another of the White House state parlors and, under some presidencies, has been used as a music room.  In recent administrations it has been used to host small dinner parties. The portrait hanging above the mantel is of Angelica Singleton Van Buren, daughter-in-law of President Martin Van Buren, and was painted by Henry Inman.

The Red Room

The furniture in the Red Room is in 19th century Empire style, a theme dating to the Monroe presidency and retained when the room was redecorated during the Kennedy and Nixon administrations. The red twill-satin wall coverings were selected by First Lady Jacquelyn Kennedy in 1962.

The Vermeil Room

The Vermeil Room features pastel yellow walls and, in addition to the silver collection from which it derives its name, houses the portraits of seven former First Ladies.

The Library

The decor in the White House Library this year celebrates reading and sharing of holiday stories with loved ones. A stylized "tree" created with green-spined books and red ribbons is a focal point beneath the chandelier.

The Library

Franklin Delano Roosevelt's copy of an 1866 edition of Dickens' A Christmas Carol is on display in The Library.

The China Room

The China Room bears a theme this year of a tradition of dining and hospitality. The table is set for a dinner using the Reagan china and decorated with ailcwe bowls containing red currants and roses.

As in years past, the State Dining Room is the final destination for the elaborately engineered gingerbread replica of the White House.

The Gingerbread Whitehouse

This year's gingerbread replica of the White House reflects the First Lady's vision for classic holiday decor and highlights the Executive Residence's southern exterior. More than 200 pounds of baked dough and 20 pounds of icing were used in the creation of the miniature by White House chefs under the direction of executive pastry chef Susan Morrison.
