Mortgage broker John and his wife Audrey, a real esate agent, have been raising their three young kids, Tyler, Callie, and Courtney, in Austin, Texas. But with the kids getting older, they are now on the hunt for a larger home, one with lots of space inside and even more land on the outside. Audrey wants an farmhouse in a bright feminine palette, but John has his heart set on a Texas style ranch with a grand fireplace and lots of rustic wood. But once they find a place they both adore, their problems are far from over as they realize their big ideas for remodeling might be far outside the reach of their modest budget. With patience, compromise, and help from their designer Heather Harkovich and contractor Brian Moore, the struggle will all be worth it, and John and Audrey will finally settle in to a beautiful new family home.

Chip and Jo show them a range of fixer uppers each with its own unique style and challenge. Will they choose the 1965 traditional covered in lime green carpeting, the lovely move-in ready with insufficient bedrooms, or the neglected farmhouse with lots of acreage that Devon says should be surrounded by crime tape? The challenges escalate when the Gaines' mini-inspection reveals some unusual damage by an unexpected antagonist adding a 3,000-dollar sting on the Jonklaas' tight budget. Chip and Joanna Gaines take Denitia and Norris Blount on a tour through three houses near Baylor University. The Blounts are almost empty-nesters with two kids at home and two on their own. Norris is the Sports Chaplain at Baylor and treats his students like family. They need a house to be big enough to entertain a whole football team. The Gaines' biggest challenge is working with the couple's conflicting tastes. Denitia loves old homes with lots of character and a big backyard. Norris wants a modern home with little or no yard, preferring astro-turf over grass. Will the Blounts be able to compromise on one of the three houses? Will they choose the Outdated Classic'with its large linebacker-size entryways and huge yard? Or will it be the 5-bedroom Unstately Manor with the bland exterior and backyard pool? Or will the winner be the Cute Cottage with the small lawn and party-size kitchen? The Gaines have their work cut out for them turning the Blount's house into a stadium-size home with a low-maintenance lawn.

Chip and Joanna Gaines take Genny and Russ Davis on a tour through three homes in Woodway, Texas. Woodway is considered "upper-crust", an established neighborhood with older homes, large trees and massive yards. They want to move to Woodway because of the city's reputable school district. However, Genny Davis is a real estate agent and Russ builds new homes for a living and they are a bit reluctant to move into a fixer upper - a fact that distresses Chip but inspires Joanna. Will the Davis' choose the "Tree House" with the pool, massive fireplace and monster tree blocking the front door? Or will it be the asymmetrical "Stonehenge House" Chip says looks like an airplane and Russ describes as over-the-top masculine? Or maybe they'll choose the third house with the shared driveway on a quiet cul-de-sac? The drama escalates when an unexpected permit problem costing 30,000 dollars threatens to turn this fixer upper into a flop. Will the Davis' jump ship and build a new home instead?

With two kids under the age of ten, Jaime and Kyle Ferguson are drawn to the good schools and spacious lots in the area of McGregor, Texas. They are looking for a house with four bedrooms, an open kitchen, and lots of trees, and hope that Chip and Joanna can help them find the perfect fit. Their budget of $450,000 allows them a lot of flexibility for renovations, so Chip and Joanna take them on a tour of three houses in the area that couldn't be more different. The first stop on their tour is a large ranch-style home Chip calls the 'House in the Woods.' The next house feels like a step backward in time. Nicknamed the 'Wild West House,' it is a unique Victorian-style house said to be owned by a banker in the late 1800s. The last house they visit is a large, modern-style ranch nicknamed the 'Cliff House.'

Jeff and Sara Jones are Baylor sweethearts and newlyweds, returning to Waco to find a house where they can settle down and one day raise a family. Their all-in budget is $235,000 and they're hoping to find a house with three bedrooms, a big kitchen, and a big backyard in the Mountainview area. The first house they visit is the 'Beach House,' aptly named after the brightly painted surf-themed bedroom they find on the tour. Chip and Joanna bring the Joneses to 'The Schoolhouse' next. The Schoolhouse is much bigger and has a beautiful backyard, but is also more expensive, which would mean less flexibility in their renovation budget. Their last option is the 'Red Door House.' While the house isn't in the Mountainview area like they were hoping, Sara and Jeff are impressed by its character and curb appeal.
