Mariam and Ben are expecting their first baby, so they're ready to get out of their cramped Santa Monica, CA condo and into a home of their own. But even with a budget of over a million dollars, finding a place they can both agree on in the area's expensive market won't be easy. Their agent Mike Springer needs to find a ranch for her, something modern for him, an open concept for her, a closed concept for him, and while he wants a pool, she definitely does not. Which means once they get the keys, they'll need to tackle some major renovations to get everything they both want. With help from designer Rona Graf and contractor Guy Sharabi, they'll face everything from corroded plumbing to catastrophic floors, not to mention, a little girl who makes an early arrival. But if they can survive all the stress, eventually they'll be rewarded with a stunning new home that the whole family will love.

The Purks have been renting for three years and are now ready to buy their own little piece of Texas. They'd like to avoid a cookie cutter home preferring an older home with lots of character but with the opportunity to make their own mark. They're looking for an open floor plan with a big kitchen in a neighborhood lined with big trees, wide sidewalks, and quiet roads located close to downtown. Their biggest fear is getting in over their heads with a historic home that may have lots of hidden costs. Will they choose the 1920's cottage with lots of character but only one bathroom, the 1940s 'Dutch Door House' with the foundation issues, or the 1930s timeless brick Tudor with the hobbit-like front door? The Gaines have their work cut out for them with these historic wonders that are plagued with old age issues. Will the Purks' fears be realized when they face pricey repairs on their vintage fixer upper?

Chris and Lindy Ermoian feel like nomads - after living in five homes in six years, they are more than ready to settle down into a forever home. They like the Hewitt area of Texas because of its close proximity to jobs and family. With a total budget of $237,000, Chris and Lindy hope to find a 3-4 bedroom house with an open floorplan, a "man cave" for Chris, a nice yard for their dogs, and a relaxing, coastal style for Lindy. The first house they visit Chip calls the "All American Ranch" because of it's colonial style exterior. The second home Chip nicknames "The Green Mile," for the expansive yard and long driveway leading up to the house. Last, they tour "The Wood House." The carpet inside has a bad odor, and an awkward pony wall closes off the front entry.

Cameron and Jessie Bell currently live in a 690 square foot house and love the cozy charm of small-scale living. While they're not necessarily looking for a larger space, they do want a place to call their own; and they need Chip and Joanna's help. They're looking for the character of an older home, and aren't afraid to brave the filth and grime that comes with years of disrepair. The first house they visit is nicknamed "The Duplex House." Formerly a duplex, as the name suggests, it has a more closed off and quirky layout that will need some opening up. "The Transition House" is next, with highlighter-green paint on the exterior and an overall ravaged appearance on the inside. Last, they visit "The Shotgun House." This house is also abandoned, falling apart, and is the smallest of the three. Because it is a shotgun house, all the rooms are conjoined, making for very little privacy in the bedroom.
