A boring backyard is transformed from a non-usable space to a little piece of the Italian countryside with various areas to both entertain and to relax. The creation of a large elevated patio covered in pavers and an outdoor fireplace create a lounging area that provides a view reminiscent of the Italian countryside. The addition of large raised garden boxes and a multi-tiered fountain and benches create a strolling garden. A homeowner that's struggling with a backyard that's fallen into ruin accepts Matt Blashaw's offer to transform it with defined features. Taking a cue from the homeowner's eclectic style, Matt replaces a patchy lawn, rickety shade structure, and crumbling concrete pond with a system of curved floating redwood decks. Together, Matt and the homeowners build a new gate with "windows" that give the fence line a sleek, modern look. They pour a concrete garden wall that is treated to make it look like wood. A pergola with privacy screens creates a new area for seating. An old shed gets a facelift. And in the center of the yard, Matt and the homeowners place a DIY concrete and metal fire table, which highlights an inviting entertainment space.

The Purks have been renting for three years and are now ready to buy their own little piece of Texas. Their biggest fear is getting in over their heads with a historic home that may have lots of hidden costs. Will they choose the 1920's cottage with lots of character but only one bathroom, the 1940s 'Dutch Door House' with the foundation issues, or the 1930s timeless brick Tudor with the hobbit-like front door? The Gaines have their work cut out for them with these historic wonders that are plagued with old age issues. Will the Purks' fears be realized when they face pricey repairs on their vintage fixer upper?
