When Ann and Craig Turkel announced they were going to buy a vacation home in the Palm Springs area, their friends thought they were nuts. That's because this Southern California couple does not even own their primary residence in Santa Monica. They're determined to raise their son, Ben, in the trendy "North of Montana" section of this vibrant beachside city, but they simply cannot afford to buy a home there. So they've decided to hang on to their cozy rental and buy a second home out of town. The Palm Springs area is an ideal location because it's only a couple of hours away by car and it has all the golf, tennis and wide-open spaces this family wants.
