In Defense of 'House Hunters': Casey and Alex’s ‘Boho Granny Chic’ Kitchen

A fashion blogger explains her vast wardrobe of overalls and provides updates on her cats' acceptance of the ‘catio’ seen on House Hunters Renovation.

In Defense of House Hunters is a series featuring your favorite home buyers addressing their notable  er, questionable — choices seen on HGTV’s House Hunters shows.

The California couple in the House Hunters Renovation episode “Renovation Walls and Wardrobes” definitely had a lot of specific ideas about what makes the perfect home, and that means a lot of good-natured debate along the way. Because what's an episode of House Hunters without a little friction between home-buying parties?

Casey Carlson is a style blogger, and her fiance, Alex, is a spirits brand ambassador (yes, really). She’s after that "boho granny chic" look, and he’s desperate for a garage to work on his custom motorcycles. They briefly considered a “unique” place with a Pepto pink fireplace, but ultimately, landed on the perfect home with a backyard for the pets, a garage for the bikes and space for Casey to create her dream office space/fashion closet. With the help of a few dozen pairs of (very chic) overalls, some support beams and a shared creative vision, they ended up with the digs of their California dreams.

We had a chance to catch up with Casey and find out how it's all going a few months post-move-in, plus ask about all.of.those.overalls.

How is the fashion closet-slash-office working out for you?

Ridiculously well. I have to pinch myself every morning that I walk into that closet. It's funny, because for the most part, it looks kind of like a bomb went off in there. I thought with all the work we put into the storage space I'd be a little bit more organized, but I still am a little bit of a mess. But every once in awhile, I will go through and organize everything, and it's amazing.

Speaking of fashion, did you deliberately try to look like "I'm A Person Renovating A House" with your wide selection of overalls wardrobe selection? You were definitely looking the part with the wide selection of overalls.

Pants aren't really in my wardrobe, and also, I wasn't able to wear a hat. I really love wearing hats, and I felt like, "What do I wear if I don't have a hat to balance out my outfit?" So, kind of nerdy, I think, in the fact that I was trying to scramble to figure out what made sense. So I was a little ironic and I wore a lot of overalls, which are probably the only pants I own. I had fun with it, for sure.

Are you a little bummed you didn't end up with the pink house with the pink fireplace? That seemed very close to your heart.

I'm a little bit bummed that we don't have a pink fireplace, for sure. But I think that the amount of character that we added once we made the renovations definitely surmounted that in a way. Like, especially our wooden beamed ceilings. That's the talking point now. I'm definitely excited about the character that we ended up putting into our house.

How are the pets liking their new domain?

The dog is obsessed with her backyard. It's her entire raison d'etre, her backyard. The cats keep trying to get outside, and it's really funny. One night, our black cat, Rex, made it out the front door and I was sans glasses, in my underwear, in the dark chasing a black cat. So that's been a little bit of an adjustment, trying to figure out, “How do we function with cats in a house?” But they're doing really well and I think they're really liking it.

Is the "catio" a hit?

They really are loving the catio. For sure. I really hope we inspire a lot of people to make one.

So remember when you saw a “closet swing” in one of the houses you looked at? Did you end up installing one in your house, or nah?

No, unfortunately. It was just a little bit of fun that we got to have during filming, but we will eventually have a swing in our backyard, so that's something to look forward to. We did get a hammock to set up between two trees, so I think we'll take the inspiration from the closet and move it to the backyard.

How is Alex doing with his garage and speckled "chicken feed" floor?

His garage is his sanctuary. That man is so happy. Since we finished the garage, he has been building a chopper, and he is actually doing things he could've never done when it comes to designing bikes. He's been actually doing little Instagram stories on the process of building this chopper, and he's getting so much encouragement for the DIY/behind the scenes vibe from his friends, like, "You should be doing this, you should make a YouTube channel, you should have your own show on building bikes." So he's having so much fun with it, and who knows, it might even lead to a career change for him.

Any regrets keeping you up at night as far as the house you picked or any of the changes you made in renovations?

As far as the house itself goes, I am thrilled that we found a house for the price that we did in the neighborhood that we did, that we are as in love with as this particular house. I think through the whole process of buying I was like, "Oh my gosh, what if we buy and I think we make the wrong decision?" In hindsight, I'm SO happy with the decision we made on purchasing our particular house and the design process. Would I have liked to see alternatives and compare them all? Maybe, but I'm obsessed with how things turned out. I love the kitchen, I love all of the spaces that we worked on. I honestly don't think I have any regrets, I do feel however, that I'm excited for us to continue working on the house and all the projects that we have planned for the next however many years we live there.

Do you have any advice for other couples looking for a house to buy and renovate while still remaining married/together/not on the verge of killing each other?

Alex and I did a really good job of making a list of each of our deal-breakers and also making a list of our top things that we wanted in a house that were the same. You've got to know all that stuff upfront, because if one person falls in love with a house that's an hour commute out of the city and doesn't know that that's a deal-breaker for the other person, they're already in love with that property. It can be a real buzzkill. I think you need to communicate the best you can with whoever you're looking for the house with and that will make the process and bit easier.

Endnote: Congrats on the wedding, Casey and Alex!
