Season 1, Episode 4: The Patio Renovations

After tackling the kitchen, master bedroom and bathrooms, the teams are headed outdoors! Each team will get $3,000 additional dollars just for the outdoor space. Rehab Addict star Nicole Curtis will judge the transformations.

Unit A: The Design Plan

Sisters Shauna and Anika have the most public outdoor space in The Block's front unit, so a privacy fence is a must. They'll cover the concrete patio with low-maintenance artificial turf and wooden parquet flooring, then add a seating area, bar and pergola.

Unit A: Patio, Before

A stark, concrete patio didn't invite guests to enjoy L.A.'s year-round sunny weather.

Unit A: Patio, Before

The patio is completely transformed, complete with some DIY touches. Shauna and Anika used the old fence wood to create custom planters, and Shauna painted an original art piece to hang above the outdoor sofa.

Unit A: Fencing, Before

As seen on HGTV's "Flipping the Block," the run-down fence with missing slats made this street-facing space less private.

Unit A: Reclaimed Wood Fencing, After

As seen on HGTV's "Flipping the Block," a new, reclaimed wood fence adds character and additional privacy to the Red Team's patio. Planter boxes hold herbs, trees and flowers for low-maintenance greenery.

Unit A: The Sisters With Judge Nicole Curtis

The sisters' lush, low-maintenance design impresses Nicole, but she's not a fan of the unfinished flooring and final details.

Unit B: The Design Plan

In keeping with their condo's beachy feel, Curtis and Amanda plan to add a boardwalk and outdoor dining area to their backyard space.

Unit B: Dig, Dig, Dig

To save on labor costs, Curtis and Amanda opt to do the back-breaking work of digging a 12-inch-deep trench for their outdoor water line.

Unit B: Patio, Before

Bare concrete and dirt greeted Amanda and Curtis upon move-in to Unit B.

Unit B: Patio, After

A relaxing, beach-chic space — complete with sand underfoot — invites potential buyers to enjoy the outdoors.

Unit B: The Couple With Nicole Curtis

Even Minnesota native Nicole Curtis embraced the toes-in-the-sand feeling of this made-over patio, and she loved the boardwalk and outdoor shower.

Unit C: The Design Plan

Since twins Brian and Craig don't have a dedicated dining space indoors, they decide to turn their backyard into an outdoor eating area, complete with a hand-built pergola.

Unit C: Backyard, Before

A shade tree and lots of privacy weren't being utilized in the pre-renovation outdoor space.

Unit C: Backyard, After

New sod and a chimea nestled under the backyard tree create an inviting outdoor seating area.

Unit C: Dining Area, Before

Located just off the kitchen, the outdoor patio was drab and dirty prior to the renovation.

Unit C: Dining Area, After

The brothers built a custom pergola to provide style and shade atop a new dining table that will fit a party.

Unit C: The Brothers With Nicole Curtis

The brothers finished (finally!) and Nicole loved their pergola, but questioned whether the buyer would be able to maintain the sod and green areas.

Unit D: The Design Plan

John and Whitney are the only team to attempt a raised deck in their outdoor space. They'll also build a DIY bar.

Unit D: Shopping for Supplies

John and Whitney load up patio furniture, plants and accessories during the outdoor space makeover.

Unit D: The Backyard, After

The new raised deck houses a picnic table for a crowd, while a rolling bar and firepit make for after-dinner fun.

The Final Decision

The teams line up to hear judge Nicole Curtis' pick for top backyard makeover. She'll choose the team who added the most value and style to their space.

And the Winner Is...

Team Black! Nicole loved the multi-functional backyard space John and Whitney created at Unit D.

Congratulation, John and Whitney!

Tune in next week as the contestants make over the condo guest bedrooms with judge Scott McGillivray.
