Backyard for a Bargain?

Steve and Stacie wanted a home near St. Pete Beach with plenty of outdoor space, a master suite and a spacious garage for Steve's motorcycle projects. How'd they pull it off with a tight budget and a laundry list of renovations?

BEFORE: The Living Room

The Blue Tides house had tons of potential but presented plenty of challenges, including this unique aquarium wallpaper throughout the front room.

BEFORE: The 'Animal Room'

Before renovations began on the Blue Tides house, this room off the kitchen was overtaken by large, hair-covered animal cages. Removing them revealed how much light the back of the house could get.

BEFORE: Bedroom

With two small bedrooms on the first floor, Steve and Stacie realized they would need to build up if they wanted their ideal master suite. With plans in place to rebuild the garage, it made sense to start from scratch with a second floor master suite and balcony above it.

BEFORE: The Kitchen

Steve and Stacie decided to sacrifice their dreams of gutting the underwhelming kitchen in favor of a new garage and master suite, which ate up much of their budget.

BEFORE: The Backyard

Chain link fencing and uneven ground made the old backyard anything but inviting. Steve and Stacie increased their budget to allow for exterior renovations and an outdoor hangout spot.

What a difference pavers make! After leveling out the backyard, new pavers were laid to create two patio areas off the garage and the kitchen.

This seating area off the kitchen is the perfect spot for happy hour drinks before dinner under the stars.

No homeowner was left behind during the renovation, including Steve and Stacie's dog, who got his own brand new digs.

AFTER: The Backyard

With their budget maxed out, Steve and Stacie decided to set aside their plans for a pool until later but left space in between the paved patio areas that is now occupied by a fire pit and lounge chairs.

Steve and Stacie joked they have "more seating than friends" in their new backyard.

Accent rugs and creative landscaping give the neutral patio areas pops of color.

The seating area off the garage, which has doors on either side, allows Steve to stay in the action with guests while he's working on his motorcycle.

It's small touches, like this glass lantern, that can tie an outdoor living space together.

AFTER: The Garage

Rebuilt from the ground up, the new garage has a warm, terra cotta-colored floor and bright white, water-resistant paint over the cinderblock walls.

AFTER: The Master Suite

Steve and Stacie got their dream bedroom, bathroom and massive walk-in closet by thinking creatively and building from scratch on top of the new garage.

AFTER: The Master Suite

Porcelain, "wood look" tile gives the bedroom a luxurious feel while keeping cleanup from a day at the beach hassle-free.

Welcome home, Steve and Stacie!
