A Kitchen Cousins Take on Hollywood Regency Style

Kitchen Cousins John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino took an ugly, outdated and unfinished kitchen and turned it -- and adjoining rooms -- into this stylish space with high entertainment value and a healthy dose of glam.

A Kitchen Cousins Take on Hollywood Regency Style

Angel and Melissa's house is an older home that already had touches of classic, upscale California design. The Cousins drew on that for inspiration and, for the overall renovation, built on some existing motifs. "We're going with a Hollywood Regency aesthetic," says Anthony, "which combines elements of timeless glamor, glossy darks, clean whites, bright metals and lavish prints."

Elegantly Rustic

Simple wood furnishings blend with sleek and shiny decorative accents in the newly remodeled dining room and kitchen.

Statement-Piece Dining Table

For a distinctive custom addition, the Cousins hand built this new dining table using wood reclaimed from old wine barrels and a welded iron frame.

Simplicity and Spice

The new dining table is staged using basic white dishes and simple unadorned flatware.

Touches of Green

John built custom walnut wall-mounted planter boxes, gave them a dark stain finish and added succulents in varying shades, bringing natural and raw wood elements to the dining area.

Glitter, Glitz and Fine Cookware

Two sides of the new kitchen are wrapped in a dark fire-clay tile backsplash and, for a bonus Hollywood flourish, finished using a specially mixed gold grout.

Organically Sculpted

In another purposefully nature-inspired addition, Anthony and John fashioned a custom live-edge tasting bar for the kitchen peninsula using a wood slab cut from a white ash tree.

Creatively Contrasted

On one of the kitchen walls, new cabinets painted in dark gray provide smart contrast with the white quartz countertops and farm style sink as well as with the white cabinetry on the opposing wall.

Storage Issue Resolution

The renovation wish list included lots of additional storage space. That wish has been checked off the list with new floor-to-ceiling white cabinets that surround the refrigerator and span an entire end wall.

The Kitchen, BEFORE

The homeowners also had on their kitchen wish list the repair of the unsightly, unfinished wall on one side of the kitchen -- a leftover from an earlier bathroom addition. They might also not be sorry to see the turquoise tile countertop and backsplash go.

Kitchen, AFTER

A new wraparound fire-clay tile backsplash, dark gray cabinets with gold accents, apron front sink and white quartz countertops make for a much more elegant and eye-pleasing presentation.

Angel runs a small-batch tequila distillery, and he and Melissa are both wine enthusiasts, so the couple was in search of a creative way to display and serve from their collection of select wines and spirits. Prior to the renovation, that took the form of modular kit shelving placed directly in front of a pantry door.

Oversized 24"x24" black porcelain floor tiles provide a touch of elegance and added contrast against the white quartz counters and cabinetry.

Open Concept

Prior to the renovation, a wall separating the kitchen and dining room made the kitchen feel small and confining. An underlying objective of the makeover was to provide an open concept design that would make the kitchen feel more like an integral part of the house.

The wall between the kitchen and dining room was replaced with a knee wall, making room for the new kitchen peninsula with integrated appliances.

Dining Room, BEFORE

Angel and Melissa have a strong sense of style that employed a number of classic elements. But they were ready for a change in their dining room which, like the kitchen, felt a bit narrow and closed in prior to the renovation.

Dining Room, AFTER

Taking down a portion of the dividing wall between the dining room and kitchen made both spaces feel larger.

Anthony constructed the custom dining table using an angle iron frame with mitered edges and welded legs. A plywood insert served as the platform supporting oak wine-barrel slats.

For the dining room, John and Anthony went with a green toile wallpaper in a botanical print pattern. "Wallpaper is back in a big way," says Anthony "and it just adds a level of sophistication that you can't get with paint sometimes. And being that we have these big, bold lights and darks in the kitchen, the pattern added to the dining room is just another layer of visual interest."
