In his virtual makeover, landscape designer Peter Jenny wants to continue the rockwork he started on the front steps by relaying the front path in flagstone and resurfacing the front path steps in the same river rock used on the stair returns. He also continues the river rock around the foundation.
Then, a new river rock chimney on one side of the house accentuates the woodland look of Kaki Coleman's brown shingle home. He then replaces the small double-hung window on the first floor of the house with a mulch larger bay window.
Finally, Jenny deals with the dilemma presented by a tree in the hellstrip between the sidewalk and street. This huge ash helps define the property with its spreading branches, but its root system has buckled the front sidewalk and curb.
He wants to preserve this old tree, despite the damage it's doing, so he's decided to tear out the old sidewalk and put in a new one, detouring it slightly around the old tree. He also fills the strip with groundcover, which helps mask the uneven grade around the tree.
