From: Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri

This rustic kitchen design has a long kitchen island for dining on a wood countertop, and a view of the tile backsplash and white cabinetry.

The island in the middle of the kitchen, serves as a center piece for people to gather, eat and drink, or just prepare a meal. With a new sink and faucet from ikea, and a built in dishwasher, it is a highly attractive and functional spot that is sure to be a busy spot. As seenon HGTV's "Kitchen Cousins".

Its always fun to eat at a counter, especially one that looks like this. Pure white Caesarstone is made of recycled content, which makes it durable, and its good for the environment. Fresh fruit and flowers with bright colors add a splash of color.

In a large kitchen, designer Heather Hungeling prefers to create two smaller islands instead of one behemoth — a too-large island becomes an obstacle to get around instead of a boost to functionality. Here, one island is topped in granite and the other in warm, rich Iroko butcher block (an African hardwood). Photo courtesy of Heather Hungeling

Homeowners Brigitte and Chase Ratzlaff newly remodeled kitchen in Lake Wales, Fla. The couple's kitchen was in need of a Much-Needed Makeover for Original DIY Network Special, Kitchen Crashers: Worst Kitchen in America.

This eclectic kitchen features two styles of cabinetry with complementary finishes, countertops made from polished absolute granite and an oiled dark walnut stained wood top, stainless steel appliances paneled with cabinetry and a colored enamel-finish professional range.

The Hathcoat's kitchen features ceiling beams, new backsplash, new appliances, new cabinets, a farmer sink on a new kitchen island under new lighting, after being transformed by the crew on DIY Network's original series, Kitchen Crashers.

After 10. In the old space, the old sink was a stand alone vanity, not leaving any space for other appliances. With the new cabintes, and sink, the Kitchen Cousins were able to put a new built-in dishwasher for the Grahams. This is a huge addition to the new kitchen. There was always room for a dishwasher, but no place to put one till now. As seen on HGTV's "Kitchen Cousins".

To create the illusion of a small space being bigger, stick to a monochromatic color palette. White is the perfect color to evoke a light and airy sense.

Interior design by Gregory Augustine of August Interiors.Dark walnut cabinetry builds a modern foundation for this kitchen. Materials such as stainless steel, custom glass backsplashes and granite further the modern aesthetic while remaining elegant. Butter yellow hand-tipped leather stools add the perfect accent to a very monochromatic color palette. This kitchen is anything but cold.

Aside from its sleek, clean appearance, glass countertops have many benefits. Glass can be cut into any shape and texture and can be stained in any color. Even though it's a pricier option, it's becoming increasingly more popular because of its modern look. It's easy to keep clean and its non-porous surface makes it stain-resistant and one of the most hygienic countertop materials available. To make it more durable, choose glass that's at least 1 inch thick and tempered. Danenberg Design continued the sleek look in this modern Italian kitchen with lacquered kitchen cabinets and stainless steel appliances.

White Kitchen Countertops

The contrast of darker lower cabinets with white upper cabinets can open up an otherwise dim kitchen. A beautiful crisp white stone countertop is a good incentive to keep clutter off the counters for a clean, modern look.

Although Sarah Barnard designed this kitchen for a Mediterranean estate, she avoided a stuffy Old World look by adding wow factor. The deep charcoal hood over the cooking station pops against the toffee-colored cabinets, and the embossed concrete backsplash and armless chair are transitional touches that keep the composition contemporary. Detail of the glass bar in a million dollar kitchen at a condo in San Francisco, California, as seen on HGTV’s Million Dollar Rooms. The 180 degree view of the Bay Bridge and the surrounding downtown area makes the space uniquely charming and can be seen from the space that includes the kitchen and the open dining area, two other lounge seating areas and a media room that includes a desk area and a murphy bed, but closes off from the rest of the space with custom pocket doors. Venetian plaster is used in various places throughout the space. Hidden compartments, counters, etc., give the space even more storeage as well as a cool, contemporary feel.

Stainless steel appliances, hardware and accents make this kitchen feel fresh and contemporary. Recycled countertops give the space a pop of color and an eco-friendly touch.

Durable and easy to clean, quartz imitates the look of granite or marble, but is more resistant to stains and scratches. Another bonus is quartz countertops come in a wide range of colors and have a uniform look, opposed to natural stone.

Kitchen of the HGTV Dream Home 2012 located in Midway, Utah. Engineered quartz is bacteria resistant, and its harder than granite, so you can cut right on it. Its a great heavy surface, but the consistent color makes it feel light and clean.
