The “Cloffice”

A walk-in is easy to convert from clothing to computing, but even a hall closet can be turned into an efficient office. Wallpaper or paint can set off the interior from its surroundings, and when the work day’s done, you can simply shut the doors.

The Kitchen Office

Working in the kitchen doesn’t have to mean working at the kitchen table. A dedicated nook like this one can fit neatly under the cabinets, and no one needs to know there’s a printer, not dishes, in there.

The Dining Room Office

Most people would say their dining room is the least used room in the house — lots of square feet reserved for a once-a-year formal feast. When you’re not hosting a banquet, try converting it into a workspace. (I’ll let you decide if you want to call it a “d’office.”)

The Under-the-Stairs Office

Typically a catch-all for cleaning supplies and spare paper towels, this often overlooked spot can be turned into a mini office that can feel spacious, with plenty of room for file storage.

The Laptop-Sized Office

Sometimes all you need is a table with room enough for a laptop and a cup of tea. This personal table from Touchstone makes any chair into a portable office.

The Car Office

Though a fold-out desk and in-car printer might seem like a novelty, if your job takes you on the road, this can be a way to get contracts written and deals closed on the spot. Just make sure you pull over first.

The Garden Shed Office

You can work “outside the house” while staying a few feet away in a kitted-out shed. The cost won’t approach a house build-out, but it can feel like a dedicated (miniature) office building.

The Garage Office

It may have been built to house cars, but a creative remodel can yield an airy office that gives you plenty of drive (and space).
