The exterior of this house is neat but dated, which could turn potential buyers away at the curb.

Kelly Benton and Maura Corcoran are scrambling to sell their house so they can move closer to family. The Designed to Sell team signs on to help them squeeze every possible dollar out of their sale.

Real estate expert Donna Freeman begins the assessment process with the exterior of this home, noting that it makes her feel like she's in an 1980s time warp because of the dated trim color and distracting picket fence around the landscaping. Once inside, she finds that the nice square footage is wasted.

Designer Lisa LaPorta agrees with Freeman and establishes a plan to get the house in order. She is to focus on the dining room, living room and guest bedroom.

Step 1: No guessing games — clarify the purpose of confusing spaces so buyers won't have to.

Step 2: Seek enlightenment. Brighten dark areas to make them shine at the open house.

Step 3: Size it up! Make big changes to small areas so buyers will write huge checks.

Carpenters Steve Hanneman and Brooks Utley sign on to help roll out the changes.
