Real estate expert Shirley Mattam-Male provides her professional opinion of the home’s assets and drawbacks. Her first impression is confusion – this corner-lot house has two doors, so she’s not sure which one to use. Whichever one is the front door, it needs to be better defined. In the master bedroom, Mattam-Male finds the bright blue walls a bit overwhelming and the white carpet old and dingy. The color in the bathroom is also daunting – the deep red walls make the room look small. Mattam-Male also makes note of the dreary, distressed countertop and vanity.
Designer Taniya Nayak agrees with Mattam-Male’s evaluation and has a $2,000 plan that will right all the wrongs.
Step 1: Clearly define the front door, and make the side yard more livable.
Step 2: Tone down the personality-packed, bright-blue bedroom and give it a neutral, calming décor.
Step 3: In the bathroom, paint over the lipstick-red walls with a neutral color to make the room feel bigger and brighter.

The wall by the side door is red (see top, right photo), which draws attention to the side door and away from the front door. To make matters worse, the entry to the front door isn’t very welcoming. The gate is plain and uninviting, the porch is cluttered with logs, and the ugly air-conditioning unit is clearly visible.
