It seems like every time we flip on the TV or crack open a magazine, an ad is trying to sell us some kind of youth in a bottle: an extract, pill or powder that can give us longer, healthier, happier lives.

But you don’t have to look much further than your garden for some of these “miracles.” The active ingredients in many anti-aging supplements and products are found in nature, and some are even easy to grow in your own back yard!

5 plants with anti-aging qualities:

  • Sage: There’s a good reason this herb is associated with wisdom! Sage contains compounds similar to the ones used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, as well as flavonoids that can improve brain function and memory.
  • Rosemary: Rosemary contains carsonic acid, which has been shown to reduce the effects of aging on the brain. It can also aid in blood flow to the brain and help with concentration.
  • Garlic: These tasty bulbs have been shown to lower cholesterol, thin the blood and lower blood pressure, and garlic is an all-around circulation booster.
  • Lemon Verbena: A versatile herb that grows abundantly without a lot of effort, lemon verbena can reduce the appearance of puffy eyes and increases skin circulation.
  • Rose hips. The oil found in rose hips, the small buds left behind after a rose dies, can help keep skin supple by moisturizing and increasing collagen production.

What's the best way to prepare and consume the herbs of your choice? Garlic is quite effective eaten raw, and adding the other fresh herbs to your food can be beneficial, too.
