Autumn Colors Border

Plant a mix of annuals and perennials in orange and dark shades to create an autumnal border like this one. It features Superbells 'Tequila Sunrise', Dolce 'Creme Brulee' heuchera and Colorblaze 'Royal Glissade' coleus, which has orange-brown to orange-raspberry tones. The dark plants include Illusion 'Midnight Lace' sweet potato vines.

Sonora Sunset

Infinity 'Dark Salmon Glow' New Guinea impatiens seem to blaze in "Sonora Sunset", a container planting you can duplicate with 'Black Heart' sweet potato vine and ColorBlaze 'Sedona' coleus.  All three plants are annuals that prefer plenty of shade. Most so-called black plants are actually deep maroon or purple.

Black Mondo Grass

Black mondo grass provides eye-catching contrast in mixed containers or borders. With their purple-black, grassy foliage and lavender flowers, the plants aren't just for autumn; they hold their interest year-round, with purple berries forming in fall.

'Hello! Pumpkin' Gerbera Daisies

Cheery orange 'Hello! Pumpkin' gerberas make great cut flowers, and they're equally at home in garden beds and containers. They'll bloom from the time you plant them into fall, when they'll succumb to frost. (If you live in a mild winter climate, you'll find they're hardy in zones 10 and 11).

Coral Bells

Evergreen in regions where the winters are warm, 'Black Beauty' coral bells (Heuchera) is semi-green in colder areas. The dark purple leaves are ruffled, and the plants have a mounding growth habit. Give them partial shade to full sun in your autumn garden, and use 'Black Beauty' in borders, beds, containers or woodland settings.

Fall Colors Window Box

This window box combination, called 'That's Peach', is planted with 'Sweet Caroline Raven' sweet potato vine, Sunsatia 'Blood Orange' nemesia, Dahlightful 'Georgia Peach' dahlias and Ablazin' Purple Salvia. These orange and purple-black annuals prefer part sun to sun.

Peachy Orange Plants

Not all orange plants are bold and brightly colored. Some, like Dolce® 'Peach Melba' coral bells have soft, peach tones that become more intense as the seasons change. This very cold hardy variety is planted in an autumnal container with 'Black Scallop' bugleweed, Icterina golden leaf sage and Graceful Grasses® 'Toffee Twist Sedge'. The sedge and sage are annuals; the other plants are perennials.

'Black Prince' Echeveria

Hummingbirds will visit this succulent's salmon-red flowers, which bloom in fall and winter in hardiness zones 9 to 11. You can also grow 'Black Prince' Echeveria as a houseplant to enjoy its rosettes of near-black, fleshy leaves. Give the plants partial to full sun; once they're established, they won't need much water.

'Fall-ing for You'

Proven Winner's combination planting, 'Fall-ing for You', gets its orange and black colors from Dolce 'Creme Brulee' heuchera, orange sedge, and 'Black Scallop' bugleweed. 'Goldilocks' creeping jenny and 'Hermann's Pride' dead nettle spill nicely over the container's edge. This combo planting also includes tricolor sage as a filler and tufts of 'Overdam' feather reed grass.

Coleus 'Vino'

In the sunlight, the velvety leaves of this coleus, 'Vino', look almost black. They're actually a rich, deep burgundy with bright, lime green margins. Use this annual in your fall containers or in the landscape until frost.

'Sun Kissed' Hanging Basket

Fill a hanging basket with Halloween colors when you plant orange-yellow Superbells 'Spicy' calibrachoas and dark 'Sweet Caroline Red' sweet potato vine. To brighten the basket, tuck in some orangish-yellow Supertunia 'Honey' petunias.

Fresh Flowers and Foliage in Orange and Black

For fall arrangements, take your pruning shears into the garden. This bouquet was cut from bright orange Sunjoy 'Tangelo' barberry shrubs, dark purplish-black Summer Wine Ninebark, orange-red Oso Easy 'Paprika' roses, and Oso Easy 'Strawberry Crush' roses.

Black Viola

Compact Viola 'Corina Black' is very frost tolerant and blooms into late fall. You may even get a few flowers during a stretch of warm winter weather. Give these near-black annuals sun or shade, and they'll spread 10 to 12 inches and reach about 10 inches high.
