Twenty-Minute Scarf Projects

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-1030 -- More Projects »
Designer Mary Jo Hiney shares ideas for creating unique scarf embellishments that can be done in less than 20 minutes.

Materials:

3/8 yd. fabric for scarf (Silk is wonderful for this.)
fusible tape
beaded fringe

Steps:

  1. Press a half inch of fabric underneath the long side of the fabric. With the wrong side up, fold over the other (unfinished edge) to the middle of the fabric so wrong sides are together, right side is up.

  • Place a strip of fusible webbing on the edge and fold over the pressed edge to cover the webbing (figure A). Fuse in place.

  • To finish the ends, press under a half inch to the wrong side all around the bottom.

  • Cut the desired length of beaded fringe, and glue each end to prevent unraveling.

    Figure B
  • Slip in the fusible webbing along the bottom edge, and place the fringe on top (figure B).

  • Place another piece of webbing on top of the fringe, making sure all the fabric, beading and webbing line up. Fuse.

  • The scarf can be further embellished with rhinestones, if desired. Just use a heating wand called a hot fixer tool and rhinestones backed with glue (both available at craft stores).

To embellish scarves made from a heavier fabric, you will have to use a sewing machine with the 3/8 yards of fabric.

    Steps:

    1. Sew a seam down the long side of the fabric, right sides together, leaving a small gap in the stitching in the middle. Sew the ends.

    2. Turn the scarf by pulling the fabric through the small opening you left.

    3. To embellish the ends glue on some fringe with fabric glue, which is strong enough to work well on textured fabrics. Once the fringe is positioned and secure, stitch it into place.

    Appliques

Another option for embellishment is to use applique by the yard backed with glue. Cut the applique, and adhere designs randomly on the scarf (figure C). Beaded fringe can be added to the ends if desired.

    Embossed Velvet

    Figure D
Use heavy, vintage lace to emboss a velvet scarf. Place the lace on a towel, right side up. Place a layer of velvet over the lace, right side down. Spritz with some water and iron the damp cloth until it is dry. The pattern will transfer to the velvet (figure D). Create random patterns or just embellish one end for an interesting effect.
