Shiny hair and a healthy scalp are easy to achieve with tips and recipes from stylist Bunny Nelson.

Pre-Shampoo Conditioner

Cut up the following fruits:

cantaloupe--Use the skin, seeds and pulp, which contain natural oils and antioxidants (that give integrity and strength to the hair)
oranges--vitamin C
apples--pectin, adds shine and strengthens the hair

Preparation:

Use two to three pieces of each fruit and boil them in two pints of water for 10 minutes. Cool, then strain.

Combine the strained liquid with equal parts of vinegar and decant into a plastic bottle. It will keep in the refrigerator up to two weeks.

Apply the conditioner to a wet head, working in thoroughly. Leave on the hair for about five to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Shampoo as usual. You won’t need a conditioner after shampooing. Use once or twice a week.

Deep Conditioner

Ingredients:

1 egg
1 cup plain yogurt

Preparation:

Mix an egg with yogurt to make a heavy paste for hair. Massage in and leave on the hair for 10 to 30 minutes, depending on how much conditioning your hair needs. Wearing a plastic cap worn over your hair will increase the intensity of the effect. Rinse thoroughly and shampoo. Repeat one to two times a month.

Vinegar Rinse

Vinegar is a terrific daily rinse. It coats the hair to remove frizz, helps repair sun damage and adds volume. Here's how to make your own mixture.

Ingredients:

3 to 4 Tbs. vinegar
2-1/2 cups water

Preparation:

Mix the two ingredients and pour into a bottle. Apply the mixture to the root of the hair (see photo at right) and let gravity move it out to the ends. Drench the hair at the scalp. This helps with the yeast that causes dandruff and dry scalp. This can be used daily as a rinse after shampooing.

Other Ideas

  • Give yourself a scalp massage by rubbing your scalp in a circular motions with a firm touch, as if you were shampooing your hair. This releases tension and increases circulation.

  • To release tension in the neck, lace fingers behind the neck and slowly pull them forward, unlacing slowly.
