Rosy Floral Rings
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-1410 -- More Projects »
Floral designer Ardith Beveridge shows how to make floral rings with roses.
- Candle rings are a great way to make interesting floral decorations, or a great way to grow small plants. They now come in one piece with the round foam attached to a plastic tray (figure A). In the center will be a water gauge telling you how high the water level should be kept.
- Mix your flower food in warm water and pour into a large plastic tub. Place the ring, foam-side down gently in the water to free-float. Do not force the ring into the water. When the ring finishes bubbling, it is fully saturated.
These rings come in three sizes. The foam is very similar to the chemical composition in soil. Because of this, the foam can be planted in and your plants can continue to grow. Dig out a small hole using a spoon and insert a small plant into the hole, such as ivy (figure B). Replace some of the removed foam over top. Do this around the ring to make a wreath. This will last as long as you want to keep it. Water the ring in the center.Roses, moss, foliage, flowers, papyrus grass, etc. are all interesting plants to place in the foam rings. Artificial fruit can also add a nice look.
For interesting presentation, place a cake in the center of the ring on a pedestal (figure C), or place a bowl of cookies, fruit or a candle inside a hurricane lamp.
