The name is pronounced “beever,” the locals of times past having mispronounced the French in order to disparage its 11th-century Norman founders. The castle has been rebuilt several times over the centuries; the current structure was built after a catastrophic fire in 1816. The castle is the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland and their five children.
