A student team at the University of Colorado took on a challenge to build an attractive, energy-efficient, solar-powered home and took it one step forward by using only bio-based and recycled materials. Natascha Couvreur created a communal environment with three distinct spaces for her three daughters so they can be together whether sleeping, studying or playing. Artist and cabinet-maker Kevin Chick turned his bathroom into a faux stone masterpiece. Richard Fink spent 30 years building his dream house, a 5,000-square-foot medieval fortress he built with fieldstones. Jean Benelli built a chicken coop incorporating her love of color, pageantry and the drama of religious artwork.
