Comfortable seating, extra storage solutions and a place for social gatherings were the major motivations for this family room remodel.

Designer Amy Studebaker shares how she redesigned this room with striking architectural details to accommodate the homeowners' needs.

What were the main items on the homeowners' wish list?

The family wanted a room that could accommodate everyday family activities as well as social gatherings. They also needed more seating areas and additional storage space. The fireplace was an important element of the design to the family as well.

What was the biggest obstacle in this space?

Since this room was originally an addition, it lacked the same details and architectural elements of the rest of the house, so my goal was to blend the spaces together. This was accomplished by adding box beams on the ceiling, exposing the brick around the bay window, adding built-in bookcases and adding a custom stone fireplace surround.

Does the end result match the original plans?

To be honest, the end result ended up matching the original plan quite well!

What did you learn from this project?

Because of the detailed planning, as well as the frequent meetings, the project came together easily and was a success. The level of communication that took place during this project will be something that I take with me to future jobs.

What “hidden gems” did you discover during this remodel?

For the fireplace, we created a larger-than-normal firebox which set the stage for the custom stone surround, adding character and charm. Different drawer pulls for the window seat, bar, and bookcases made a unique difference as well. The new white marble bar top made the room feel lighter while the drawers in the window seat created additional, and hidden, storage space.
