Working for Birds

Tacoma News Tribune

Tips for attracting wildlife to your back yard from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife:

  • Plant more trees and shrubs.

  • Add a birdbath or pond. Birdbaths should be cleaned weekly.

  • Set out bird feeders -- one for millet, one for sunflower seeds and one for suet.

  • Provide birds with a place to nest, either in birdhouses, or by leaving dead tree limbs in place.

  • Discourage non-native sparrows and starlings from nesting in your eaves by covering openings.

  • Don't let the cats out; they can harm birds that nest on the ground. Check www.abcbirds.org for ideas on keeping cats inside.

  • Work with your neighbors. Wildlife will be more attracted to larger spaces, such as several adjacent yards.
