Where the old yard lacked in character and style, the new garden more than makes up for it with a new custom fence, quartzite-paved hardscape and an abundance of tropical plants. The overgrown hedge is gone and in its place is a mixture of old and new: Existing plants, including a red Abyssinian banana (Ensete ventricosum) affectionately nicknamed "Little T," are mixed in with gingers, tree ferns, elephant ears, prayer plants (Maranta), umbrella plants (Cyperus), foxtail ferns, philodendrons, birds of paradise (Strelitzia) and more to create a jungle effect.
