The Lowdown on Pots

PHOTO

Think of containers as your gateway to dramatic centerpieces for the patio. With cascading foliage, the color and style of these pots is virtually unimportant. What matters far more is that the potting medium is of high quality and the container garden receives regular watering and occasional feeding.

Gardeners know there are practically no limits to what constitutes a pot or planter--from fancy urns and chair seats to cinderblocks and used sneakers, if the item holds potting soil, it will work. If there's no drainage hole, create one--better yet, several.

"Any container will work as long as it drains," says Susan Hamilton, associate professor of horticulture at the University of Tennessee. "Also, the deeper the container, the easier it will be to water and maintain over the growing season."

We hope these ideas will encourage you to find attractive planters for your home and garden.
