This tabletop water garden is easy to put together. Any bowl that holds water will work — including ceramic, terra cotta, concrete or glass.

If your container is stone, cement or terra cotta, you'll want to glaze the inside of the pot to make it waterproof. If the container has a hole in the bottom, plug it with plumber's putty from both the inside and the outside. (Glaze and plumber's putty can be found at a hardware store.)

For the garden shown here, place a little gravel in the bottom of a basin. The pebbles will help you seat and level the container.

  • Set a container of water stargrass, pot and all, in the bottom of the basin and add pebbles to the soil surface to keep the soil in place. Next, add a pot of varigated yellow water snowflake. The leaves will float to the top once water is added. The water plants need to sit from 2 to 6 inches under the water. If they don't, just use an upside-down terra-cotta saucer or stone to raise them.

  • A flat stone that looks like the container with some pebbles on top will tie it all together.

  • A few rocks form a shelf for the small ceramic frog.

  • Fill the basin with water.
