The preschool kids at Kinderberry Hill Childcare Center in Roseville, Minnesota, are learning about the benefits of gardening at an early age: they're learning about the environment and getting a hands-on experience with the growing process. The garden unit they're studying begins with storytelling and progresses to planting.

The program encourages self-esteem because they're proud of what they’ve accomplished. They learn how seedlings take root, "drink" water and what the baby plants need to grow into mature plants and vegetables. They learn cooperation and share in the maintenance tasks of planting, watering and weeding.

The children form small groups to get more one-on-one attention. And they mark their crops with pictures of the vegetables they have planted.

This approach helps cultivate the budding young gardening enthusiasts of tomorrow.
