Plant type: Deciduous tree
Botanical name: Acer griseum
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5 to 7(8)

An exquisite small tree with a round to oval canopy, the paperbark maple gets its name from the sienna to red-brown exfoliating bark. Foliage (compound leaves with three leaflets) is dark green to bluish-green in summer, and fall color varies from bronze and red to a sometimes intense red. Branching is fine, so texture in winter is delicate and airy. Grows slowly; mature size averages 20 to 30 feet tall by 15 to 30 feet wide.

Culture: Give this tree moist, well-drained soil in full sun. It adapts to acid or alkaline conditions. Plant a container-grown or balled-and-burlapped young tree in spring.

How to use it: A wonderful specimen tree, the paperbark maple is best displayed where its stunning bark can be fully appreciated. A great patio tree.
