Two big money-saving ideas on this project! Broken concrete pieces rescued from a recycling facility and stained a warm color are used to form a wall and stepping stones. Cuttings from a succulent that had gotten too leggy will soon fill in the crevices. Cost of the stones: $50. Cost for the inter-stone planting: $0.
Homeowners Kim and Mike Franzini want to update and illuminate their backyard and pool area. Kim dislikes the large evergreen bushes and Mike wants more color. Designer Susan Ballinger draws up plans for a beautiful pergola complete with decorative wrought-iron elements and redwood log top. Ballinger also stains the pool deck a warm color and adds a retaining wall made from recycled concrete pieces. With colorful and aromatic plants in place and a birdbath-turned-fountain, the warm and welcoming Mediterranean look is complete.

The bushes were removed, and in their place, a retaining wall, a fence, a beautiful fountain, lots of colorful and aromatic plants, and--best of all--a pergola.

With the help of a drill, a birdbath is turned into a fountain. Planting pots are stained red and attached to the fence behind. Plants include a fruiting kiwi, lavender and purple fountain grass. Thyme is planted between the stepping stones.

Iron pieces highlight the pergola. Most of the pieces were ready-made, and custom additions were added on.

The concrete is stained to reduce glare. Staining is an easy and inexpensive way to change a pool deck, and it looks very natural.

Rustic logs give the pergola a one-of-a-kind look.

A fruiting olive, the last one at the nursery, was obtained at a discount.
