Greenery, fruit and a candle make a festive winter hanging basket.
If you've taken down your summer baskets and stored them in the garage, dig them out because host Rebecca Kolls shows how to make beautiful hanging baskets even in the dead of winter. The nice thing about these winter baskets is that anything goes. You probably already have most of the materials in your backyard or somewhere in your home.

You'll need a hanging basket with a liner, a variety of greenery, fruit (pomegranates, tangerines, apples or oranges), dried leaves, twigs, a candle and a hurricane lamp (with stones added for stability). You can buy dried leaves with glycerin on them in a floral or craft store, and they'll last much longer. You'll also need some grapevine, a few simple tools and some raffia. For plant material, you can use berries, ornamental grasses, pine cones and even dried artichokes.

The first step is to fill the basket with regular potting soil. Then lay two grapevine wreaths on top and attach them together with wire stakes. The candle should be placed inside the wreaths (figure A). Now just add the greenery starting from the bottom up. You may have to snip and prune along the way. Just make sure you weave the greenery through the grapevine so it's nice and secure.

In the empty spaces, add pomegranates or other fruit, leaves, sticks or whatever you want. Keep in mind that what you add looks best in groups of two or three. Leaves and sticks give the basket a natural look. You can make a bow out of raffia by simply wrapping wire around it. Then, just insert it into the grapevine (figure B).

Hang the basket at eye-level so that you can see the beautiful foliage plus you can get to the candle. And remember, check the stability of the candle. You never want to leave it unattended.

Other ideas for winter hanging baskets include hanging it from a simple rope for a more rustic look (figure C). Or for a fancier look, hang your basket from a decorative ribbon and add some twinkling lights.
