Why not grow a small patch of grass for your pet rabbit?

If you live in the northern climates and are suffering from the winter blues, here's a fun project that will make your friends green with envy--plant grass indoors.

You need a container (such as a terra-cotta saucer) and potting soil, and instead of grass seed, use either oats or winter rye, which you can pick up at a feed store or co-op. The reason for using these seeds instead of grass seed is that they germinate more quickly and produce a lush, thick turf.

The first step is to moisten the potting soil. Next sprinkle enough seed so it covers the entire surface of the soil and press the seeds in firmly. Lightly water the seeds. It's important to keep them moist, so wrap the entire container with plastic wrap. Once you start seeing blades of green, remove the plastic wrap. Keep the container in a sunny location and within a week, you'll have terrific turf growing on your windowsill. Trim the grass with scissors as needed.
