Before: Barren Backyard

Tim and Leigh Needham moved to Carlsbad, Calif., after spending four very cold winters in Boston, Mass. Carlsbad is famous for its 50 acres of flower fields that bloom every spring, and despite all the growth and development in the area, it still maintains a small town feel. They are happy with the interior of their home, but the backyard is just a large rectangle of dirt with two narrow spaces on either side of the house. They imagine a place to entertain, as well as room for their soon-to-come little one to play.
