Are you looking for creative ways to display your flowers? Well, here's a floral design that's sure to make your next ice-cream social a blooming success. These great flower sundaes are simple and sweet--and calorie-free.
Materials
glass container
mound-shaped flowers such as carnations, roses, hydrangeas or viburnums
cellophane (either clear or shiny)
shredded foam (can be purchased at any flower store)
floral preservative
optional: artificial cherries, glue, straws and spoons, marbles, dried cranberries, food coloring
Choose the container.
First, choose the container to hold the flowers. A parfait glass works best, but a small vase or glass works just fine, too. Hide the stems and add water.
To create the sundae illusion, hide the flower stems. You have several choices: stuff a sheet of cellophane paper into the center of the vase to form a lining. Or try adding marbles or dried cranberries to the base of the container. Or for another creative touch, fill the vase with shredded foam, and then add water tinted with food coloring. No matter which you choose, stir in some floral preservative before you pour in the water. Choose your flowers.
Flowers with a mound shape make the arrangement look like a scoop of ice cream. Carnations are great because they are not only inexpensive, but long lasting and come in a variety of colors. You can also try hydrangeas, viburnums and roses. Prepare the floral arrangement.
To prep the flowers, cut the stems rather close to the base of the flower, and remove any leaves. Then just pop them into the glass. Start with your larger flowers first, and fashion your smaller flowers as yummy toppings on top. Add the toppings.
If you want to add embellishments, you can put a rose in the center, spoons and straws on the side and a cherry on top. For toppings, it's best to use artificial cherries--just dip each one in hot, melted glue and allow to cool on a plastic sheet. Then, spray the glue with brown paint, and put the cherry on top.
