Dust Bowl Delight

Jarrett and Vickey White have lived in their spacious Spanish-Colonial home since they designed and had it built two years ago. Jarrett is a real estate developer, and the home was built to their custom specifications. The design includes an elegant center courtyard, where the Whites have been spending all their quality outdoor time relaxing and entertaining. But with two young daughters in tow, they feel that the time has come to tackle the big backyard that has remained untouched since they moved in.

Since Jarrett and Vickey built their dream home three years ago, they've ignored the barren hillside that makes up their large backyard. Now they're anxious to bring their backyard to life. Which designer will be up to the challenge?

Wendy Harper's design takes the Spanish colonial style popular in the 1920s and 1930s and updates it for a modern family. Aurora Cravens and John Walker have taken a classical Mediterranean approach, with a citrus court that opens onto the pool and a picturesque grove in the distance. Melissa Carson and Barry Magness propose dividing the Whites' backyard into separate unique outdoor rooms.

After a week of looking over the designs, Jarrett and Vickey choose Harper's plan. Taking her inspiration from the house the couple designed, Harper creates a backyard getaway for the whole family to enjoy.
