Comfortable Sunroom

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1110 -- More Projects »
Kurt and Renee Schmiederer are newlyweds who want a romantic space to enjoy quiet time together. Kurt’s job behind the scenes on film locations takes them both away from home frequently. But when they aren’t traveling, the couple likes to spend time together working on their new home. They have redecorated most of their house, but the space off their master bedroom is the one room they haven’t quite known what to do with.

The Dilemma
Host Lee Snijders arrives to help the newlyweds give new life to their would-be sunroom. A handsome but neglected fireplace offers potential as a focal point, but needs a mantel with more presence in the room. The terra-cotta tile floor is cold on bare feet yet inspires a warm and rich color scheme for the new space. The room lacks interior lighting, though lots of windows and French doors provide much natural light. Serving mostly as a catchall for storage, the space currently houses an odd mix of items, including a sofa, unused computer and storage boxes.

The Solution
  • Design coordinator Summer Baltzer incorporates unique accessories such as decorative, yet functional baskets and boxes to create visual interest with color and texture. A new area rug gives definition to the new seating area.

  • She also creates individual Roman shades from bed sheets to provide subtle privacy while leaving the white window and door frames exposed for added architectural interest.

  • Upholstered backdrops also made from coordinating bed sheets give added impact to the framed black-and-white photography for the expanse of existing white walls.

    How-To: Upholstered Backdrops

    1. Make a frame out 1 x 2s attached to 1/4-inch plywood.
    2. Next, turn the frame over and wrap it in batting, attaching it securely to the back with a staple gun.
    3. Repeat the process with the fabric, being sure to pull everything tightly for a smooth finish.
    4. Attach the art to the backdrops, hang on the wall and highlight with art lights for a high-end feel.
