Ray Hernandez is a hardworking husband who doesn't have the time or the landscape savvy to design his backyard the way he would like it. His wife, Melody, calls on host Susie Coelho, designer Jennifer Farrell and the Outer Spaces crew to transform this rundown space into a Baja-inspired backyard the couple can be proud of.
Bright colors and welcoming furnishings turn the yard into a restful destination. There's now plenty of comfortable seating for guests, and the once-barren area is complete so Ray can simply enjoy it instead of spending his free time working on it.
The basically bare covered patio area is currently used for storage and has uncomfortable chairs for the few breaks Ray takes from working on the yard.
A long bench, outdoor fireplace and lush plants plus brightly-colored accents create an outdoor living room the couple will want to spend lots of time in.
Jennifer Farrell's design will provide comfortable seating areas, add vibrant red paint to the outer fence walls, hide the air conditioning unit, include a paver pathway and create a dining pavilion.
The metal gazebo acts as the focal point to the romantic new dining area. For a cabana feel, curtains, colorful Mexican-style place settings, bright woven textiles and festive pillows enhance the Baja flavor.
After being spray painted a bright blue to match the potted plant containers, a metal wash basin is accented with colorful handpainted stripes and serves to hold logs next to the outdoor fireplace.
Life is added to an old iron grate left by the previous owners with pieces of wire tied around it in various spots to hold potted plants.
Prefabricated arches with benches and side planters are placed in front of the AC unit to disguise it and at the end of the covered patio. Sheer fabric hung across the back, potted plants and cushions soften the structure.
