'Queeny Purple' hollyhock

These plants have won All-America Selections awards for 2004. Be on the lookout for them in catalogs or in garden centers.

'Queeny Purple' hollyhock. Touted as the shortest Alcea rosea and "the first purple hollyhock available as a single color not part of a mixture," this miniature hollyhock produces three- to four-inch "powder-puff" blooms on a plant that stays under three feet. Seed will be available from mail-order catalogs, and plants should be available from garden centers.

'Gypsy Deep Rose' gypsophila

'Gypsy Deep Rose' gypsophila. Double and semi-double flowers cover this mounding plant over a longer bloom period than others in the family. Low-maintenance.

'Fresh Look Red' celosia

'Fresh Look Red' celosia. This new version of the popular bedding plant wins the AAS gold medal award for consistency, doggedly plowing through heat and humidity, rain or drought. It's very low-maintenance—not only is it pest-free but spent plumes are hidden by new flowers and foliage. The center plume measures up to 8 to 10 inches tall and five inches wide.

'Fresh Look Yellow' celosia

'Fresh Look Yellow' celosia. The yellow version of this new series produces flowers prolifically. Like 'Fresh Look Red', the center plume is large and the plant grows numerous side shoots. Good heat and humidity tolerance.

'Limbo Violet' petunia

'Limbo Violet' petunia. For this AAS winner, you get large (three inches or better) blossoms on a compact plant. Rather than becoming rangy and long-stemmed, this petunia produces a lot of blooms on a mounding plant; mature size is only about six to seven inches tall and less than a foot wide. No deadheading needed on this low-maintenance plant.
