Three months ago Steven Chapman and Ricardo Ordóñez purchased a 2,000-square-foot Spanish revival home in an established hillside community. The house was built in 1928 and still possesses many of the original details that lend character to the home; however, the kitchen was remodeled in the 1970s and now lacks flow, function and style. Steven and Ricardo would like to redo the kitchen to better suit their needs in terms of flow, function and size, but they also hope a designer's touch can restore some of the character and charm that was lost in the earlier remodel.
After careful consideration, the couple decides that Sandra Wisot's warm, sophisticated design best fulfills their desires for a comfortable, entertainment-friendly kitchen. The wall that once separated the kitchen from the utility room is now gone, allowing for a more open floor plan. The ceiling was raised in one section to allow for more light and is enhanced by a new light fixture and garden window. The center island serves many purposes since it incorporates a sink, counter space and storage in one confined unit and pairs nicely with the new cabinets and a pantry. Finally, the whole space is brought to life with rich, dark woods, tumbled-stone tiles and polished granite counters.
Before the makeover this kitchen was boring and outdated. Now the space is warm, sophisticated and ready for entertaining.
