Choose the best surface for your kitchen island.
While granite remains one of the most popular kitchen countertop options in residential kitchens, it's not the only surface that's trending now.
Stainless steel, a longtime staple of commercial kitchens thanks to its heat-resistant and hygienic properties, is a material that's recently gained in popularity. Another popular countertop material, butcher-block offers a striking but practical (and eco-friendly) addition to the kitchen.
Engineered quartz countertops, which come in a variety of gem-like colors and don't require sealing, have become a popular alternative to granite for consumers turned off by granite's high price tag but who still appreciate the stone-look.
Other ways to achieve the patterning and texture of stone is through concrete countertops with aggregates like recycled glass remnants. In addition, laminate patterns can mimic the veining of stones like marble—a popular choice on the high-end spectrum of kitchen design.
And while marble, limestone and slate are great statement-making materials in the kitchen, consumers who aren't partial to stone may want to look into the warm, natural look of wood, whether it's reclaimed, butcher-block or bamboo.
