When Ben Herzog took on this kitchen renovation in the Park Slope neighborhood of New York, he was faced with a dull, narrow space (17' at its widest point).

Here, he tells us how he capitalized on the kitchen’s architectural features, like a tin ceiling, without losing the modern touches you'd expect in a top-of-the-line cooking space.

What was at the top of the clients' wish list?

We started with a narrow, dark house, and the family wanted to bring in as much natural light as possible.

What was your single biggest issue in this makeover?

This is a very narrow house — about 17' wide at its widest point in the kitchen. We kept the island to 2' wide so we could also fit in the dining table and chairs.

What was your biggest obstacle?

To take down walls and open up the space, we had to get rid of the load-bearing wall arch. But the load had to go somewhere, so we added a steel structure inside the ceiling. Then we secured that to another piece of steel, all of which had to be done without disturbing the original tin ceiling.

What's one design tip you'd offer our readers?

The family loves the color palette and the warmth of the bricks on the fireplace. As a result of this remodeling job, I've been recommending exposed brick walls ever since.

What was your favorite "surprise" of this design job?

I really like the way the rift-oak niche between the kitchen and the living room turned out. It's the perfect spot for a small kitchen desk and shelves.
