Vivid color injects a bit of personality into this space. This makeover cost a little under $500 to achieve - thanks to some creativity, color and a few distinctive touches.
Floor
The old carpet is ripped up and vibrant orange and white vinyl tiles are laid down in a geometric pattern.
Wall Paint
Bold, 1960s op-art shapes are painted on the dinette wall in deep orange, pale orange and bright green. The kitchen prep area is painted in the bright green shade. This room has a northern exposure, so the bright colors help improve the light quality.
Window Treatment
Crisp, white curtains with big grommets are hung on a chrome curtain rod to support the contemporary look.
Chairs
Folding chairs are dressed up with polyester/cotton twill slipcovers. They match the curtains and underscore the homeowner's modern dining table.
Centerpiece
Glass beads are glued to the side of a wide glass vase, and tea lights are then placed inside to create a beautiful luminaire.
Floating Buffet Table
A useful side table is made by cutting a hollow-core door to size; it's then painted white and attached to the wall.
Mail Organizer
A plate hanger and a silverware caddy are hung on the side of a kitchen cabinet to help the homeowner keep his mail sorted and organized.
Light Tower
Floor-to-ceiling task lighting is created by erecting a large pole in one corner of the room. It is wrapped with holiday lights then white paper lanterns are stacked through the pole.
Plant Stand
Two plywood circles are fastened to both ends of some PVC plumbing pipes. The piece is then painted white to create a modern column-style plant stand.
Accessories
To complete the makeover the homeowner's colorful art and some new accessories are placed around the room.
