With a young family and a passion for entertaining, designer Kerri Kanter of Driggs Designs tackles the remodel of her own kitchen.

The transitional design includes beautiful details throughout, but the focal point is a striking granite-topped kitchen island with seating for four.

Kanter shares how having to change your plans doesn't have to crush the spirit of the design.

What was on your wish list?

It was important for us to have a beautiful and functional kitchen. My goal was to incorporate an oversized island, tons of storage and unexpected details.

What was the biggest issue?

The biggest issue when designing the kitchen was where to put the microwave oven. In the builder's plan, it was built into a cabinet next to the refrigerator. I was worried the placement would take way from the main focal points &151; the hood, pendants and island. We were able to hide the microwave in the island, which works great for our family.

How did you overcome obstacles?

Our original plan was to incorporate extra storage under the island overhang but the 10’ island did not allow for adequate walkways around the island. We were forced to forgo the extra storage by decreasing the depth of the island and were able to keep the length as long as possible. Our 9’ 8” island does not have extra storage but it provides value in so many additional ways.

What lessons did you learn?

In the building process, my husband and I didn’t discuss the details of the kitchen until the walls were up, which limited the dimensions and size of our island. Knowing the outcome, we would have delayed the building process until the specifications for the kitchen were finalized.

What are the hidden gems?

The blue walls bring a touch of the outside in while the light fixtures draw your eye upward to the detailed, coffered ceiling.
