Consider different kitchen cabinet door options and ideas when planning a kitchen remodel.

There are many kitchen cabinet door options and ideas for you to choose from when remodeling a kitchen, so asking yourself a few basic questions is a good way to get started.

Explore These Beautiful, Efficient Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

Even the most basic remodel or upgrade for your kitchen cabinets can get expensive and time-consuming, so make sure you have a clear vision of what you want for your kitchen before you make any other decisions. Do you want to completely replace the cabinet doors with a whole new style, or would refacing do the trick for you? What kind of style do you prefer, classic and traditional or modern and contemporary? What about glass doors? And are you prepared to go all out for custom? These are all very important considerations when choosing which cabinet doors are right for you.

Replacing kitchen cabinet doors can be a good way to get a completely new style with brand new material, and it's the best option if your cabinet doors are in really bad shape. Cabinets come in four options based on quality, so you'll have to decide on a budget and choose accordingly. Ready-to-assemble is the least expensive, stock cabinets (pre-made and ready for installation) are usually a little better quality, semi-custom is what its name implies with some prefab elements, and custom cabinets (the most expensive option) are designed by you and built according to your specifications. Refacing is a less expensive option than replacing the cabinet doors, though refacing won't work on some cabinets. Double-check the material your cabinet is made of before you decide to reface.

Once you've decided on how you will update your kitchen cabinet doors, you will have to choose a style. A contemporary or modern style generally has a sleek, sophisticated look, so you'll want to steer clear of anything rustic or distressed. Laminate is popular for a contemporary look, and wood is always popular, though some types of wood ruin the look of contemporary, especially if you decide to stain instead of paint. For something more traditional, you can choose from a variety of wood and laminates. Knotted pine and hickory are great for the outdoorsy rustic look, and oak works well for something more traditional. Glass cabinet doors work well for both modern and traditional styles as the primary door type or as accent doors to reinforce the tone and design style you choose.
