The biggest challenge was adding an island that would fit the narrow shape of the kitchen. What they ended up with is a long, skinny island, proportioned to the size of the room. The base of the island was ingeniously configured with lots of storage space for serving dishes, larger pots and even a pull-out cabinet with trash and recycling bins. Because the island is narrow, standard 24-inch-deep cabinets were modified to 18 inches. A 12-inch-deep cabinet was placed on the end of the island and trimmed in molding to create a wine rack.
